Gate and Garage Access

Make everyday entry easier.

How we help

Manage parking and garage access with remotes, codes or credentials. We assess the existing operator and entry hardware before recommending an access upgrade.

Who it's for

  • Condos, co-ops and rental buildings with a parking gate or garage
  • Store owners with a motorized roll-down gate
  • Homeowners adding a keypad or app to a garage door

Suitable properties

Condo / co-op parking gate
Fob or app reader on the same access platform as the lobby, with a telephone-entry unit for visitors.
Retail storefront
Remote receiver, keyed switch or smart controller on a motorized roll-down gate.
Private garage
Wireless keypad or app control on a LiftMaster, Chamberlain or Genie opener.

Main options

Individually enrolled remotes
A receiver that lets each remote be deleted on its own, instead of shared remotes that cannot be cancelled.
Keypad with individual codes
Simple to run and no credential to carry; codes should be personal, not shared.
Fob or phone reader
Can run standalone or join the lobby's access platform, so one resident list controls every door and gate.
Telephone-entry system
Units such as DoorKing let visitors call a resident who opens the gate from their phone.

Survey, installation and support

  1. 01A site survey inspects the gate or door, the operator, safety devices and power.
  2. 02The design picks the credential type: remotes, keypad, fob reader or phone app.
  3. 03You receive a written, itemized proposal with operator work, reader, safety devices and any subscription.
  4. 04The reader or receiver is installed and wired to the operator, and safety reversal is tested.
  5. 05Handover covers programming users and remotes and showing staff how to add or delete them.
  6. 06Ongoing support covers operator faults, remote replacements and access changes.

Typical timeline: 1-2 days for most single gates or garage doors

Compatibility and limits

  • Automatic gates and doors must have working entrapment protection; safety sensors are never bypassed.
  • Major motor, spring or curtain repairs on roll-down gates may need a gate specialist.
  • Replacing an Minneapolis storefront roll-down gate may trigger visibility requirements for the new gate.

How do I control who opens our building's parking gate?

Read the answer

Shared remotes are the weakest option because you cannot cancel one without reprogramming all of them. A receiver that supports individually enrolled remotes, a keypad with individual codes, or a fob or phone reader lets you remove one resident without affecting anyone else.

For condos, co-ops and office garages, tying the gate into the same access platform as the lobby (Brivo, Avigilon Alta, Kisi and similar) means one resident list controls every door and gate. Move-outs are handled in one place.

Telephone-entry systems such as DoorKing units are common at residential gates and let visitors call a resident who opens the gate from their phone.

Can a keypad or app be added to a garage door opener?

Read the answer

Usually yes. Most modern openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie accept wireless keypads, and many support app control. Older openers can often be given a universal receiver or smart controller so you do not have to replace the whole unit.

Automatic gate and door operators must be paired with working entrapment protection. UL 325 is the safety standard for gate and door operators, and it calls for monitored safety devices such as photo eyes or edge sensors on automatic gates. Reversal should be tested on every job, and a safety sensor should never be bypassed.

Common questions

Can new remotes be programmed for our garage?

Yes, for most common openers and receivers. Have the brand and model of the opener or receiver ready.

What is the safest way to give residents gate access?

Individually enrolled credentials, such as fobs, personal codes or app access, so each person can be removed without affecting others.

Can the gate open automatically for delivery drivers?

On keypads with individual codes or app-managed readers, yes, with time-limited codes or app-issued passes, ideally paired with a camera at the gate. Shared remotes cannot do this.

Does access control work include roll-down gate motor repair?

Access controls and switches are added to the operator's electrical controls. Major motor or curtain repairs usually need a gate specialist.

Will the gate still open if power fails?

Most operators have a manual release, and many can take a battery backup. Make sure staff know where the release is.
