Get your fob working with your car.

How we help

Pair a replacement remote or smart key and restore convenient access. We check vehicle compatibility and the fob itself before programming.

Common situations

  • Fob buttons stopped locking the doors
  • New fob bought online needs pairing
  • Car does not detect the proximity key
  • Cracked fob case needing a new shell

What the service includes

  1. 01The fob's signal and battery are tested to see whether it needs a battery, reprogramming or replacement.
  2. 02The replacement is matched by VIN, part number and frequency, and an aftermarket or used fob is checked to make sure it is not locked to another car.
  3. 03A programming tool connects to the OBD-II port and adds the fob to the car's immobilizer and keyless entry system.
  4. 04The emergency blade inside the smart key is cut to your door lock.
  5. 05Lock, unlock, trunk, remote start if equipped, and push-button start are tested, and lost fobs are removed from memory where the car allows.

Typical time: 20-45 minutes on site

Compatibility and limits

  • Some vehicles require a manufacturer security PIN or online authorization.
  • A few newer models, especially some European brands, can only be programmed by the dealer.
  • Used fobs are often locked to their first car; online fobs may be the wrong frequency.

Is it safe to buy a replacement key fob online?

Read the answer

It can save money, but it is the most common reason a programming visit fails. Many online fobs are used units still locked to their original car, the wrong frequency for the North American market, or low-quality copies that program but die within months.

Before buying, match the FCC ID and part number printed on your original fob, and confirm the frequency. Or ask the locksmith to supply a fob known to program to your vehicle.

If you bring your own fob and it cannot be programmed, the labor to attempt it is usually still charged, so ask about that before the visit.

Common questions

How do I know if my fob battery is dying?

Shorter range, needing several presses, and a 'key battery low' dashboard message are the usual signs. Replace the battery before assuming the fob is broken.

Can a used fob be programmed to my car?

Some can be unlocked and reprogrammed with the right tools, others are permanently locked to their first vehicle. It depends on the make and model, so check before buying one.

How do I start a push-button car with a dead fob?

Many cars let you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked slot so the chip can be read without battery power. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot.

How many fobs can be programmed to one car?

Most vehicles accept several keys, with the limit set by the manufacturer. Having at least two working keys is strongly recommended because all-keys-lost jobs cost more.

Does a new smart key come with a metal key?

Most smart keys hide an emergency blade inside. It has to be cut to your door lock as part of the job.
