Mailbox Lock Replacement

Your mailbox. Your keys.

Apartment mailboxes with individual keyed locks

How we help

Replace a worn or lost-key mailbox lock and restore reliable access to your mail. We check the lock size and who controls the mailbox before arranging the work.

Common situations

  • Mailbox key lost or never handed over
  • Mailbox lock pried open by thieves
  • New tenant needing a fresh mailbox key
  • Key turns but the mailbox door stays shut

What the service includes

  1. 01The technician confirms you are the tenant of that box, or that the landlord or managing agent has authorized the work.
  2. 02The box door is opened by picking the cam lock, which is usually a simple wafer or pin lock, so the panel is not damaged.
  3. 03The old lock is removed by its retaining nut or clip, and the cylinder length, cam length, cam direction and keyway are matched.
  4. 04The new lock is installed, the cam is checked to catch the panel fully so the door cannot be pried open, and both keys are tested.
  5. 05For building owners, a record of which key number goes to which apartment makes future lost keys easy to handle.

Typical time: 10-20 minutes per lock

Compatibility and limits

  • The carrier's master lock on the front of the panel belongs to the Postal Service and is not touched by private locksmiths.
  • A new lock on a bent box door still leaves a gap; the door may need straightening or repair.
  • Very old panels may need full replacement with approved mailbox models.

What should I check after mail theft or a forced mailbox?

Read the answer

Look at the box door itself, not only the lock. Thieves often pry the door at the hinge side or bend it at the cam, and a new lock on a bent door still leaves a gap. If the door is distorted, it may need straightening or the panel section may need repair.

Report the theft to the Postal Service and to building management, and keep a record. If checks or cards were taken, contact your bank and card issuers the same day.

When thefts repeat in a building, the weak point is often the lobby door rather than the mailboxes. A lobby door that does not latch because of a worn closer or a broken intercom strike lets anyone reach the panel, so fix that first.

Can a building replace all mailbox locks at once?

Read the answer

Yes, and it is common when a property changes hands, when old keys have been copied for years, or when many locks are worn. Replacing a full panel of cam locks in one visit is far faster per lock than single visits.

Numbering the keys by apartment and giving the managing agent a simple list makes handling a future lost key a five-minute job instead of a guessing game.

Very old panels sometimes use lock sizes that are no longer stocked. In that case a modern lock may be fitted with an adapter, or the owner may look into a panel replacement, which involves the Postal Service and approved mailbox models.

Common questions

Can I get a copy of my mailbox key cut?

Usually yes, if you still have a working key and it is a standard cam lock key. Many mailbox keys are stamped with a number that the building can use to order copies. If no key exists, replacing the lock is usually faster and cheaper than originating a new key.

Can my mailbox be opened if I lost the key?

Yes, once the locksmith confirms you are the tenant or have the landlord's authorization. The cam lock is usually picked open without damage and replaced with a new lock and two keys.

Can a locksmith work on the carrier's master lock?

No. The master lock on the front of the panel is controlled by the Postal Service. If it is broken or the panel will not open for the carrier, the building should contact the local post office.

Will my landlord charge me for a new mailbox lock?

Policies vary by building. Some landlords bill tenants for lost keys and others treat it as maintenance, so check your lease or ask your managing agent first.

How long does a mailbox lock change take?

About 10-20 minutes for a standard lock. A bent box door or an unusual older panel can add time.
