How we help
Lost a key, forgotten a combination or dealing with a failed safe lock? Share the safe make, model and symptoms so we can plan an appropriate opening and any follow-up repair.
Common situations
- Forgotten combination on a home safe
- Electronic keypad dead or showing an error
- Inherited a safe with no combination
- Safe key lost or broken
What the service includes
- 01The safe maker, model and lock are identified (mechanical dial, electronic keypad such as Sargent & Greenleaf or LaGard, or key lock), and proof of ownership is checked.
- 02For electronic locks, the battery, wiring and keypad are checked first, since a dead battery or a failed keypad causes many lockouts.
- 03For mechanical locks, manipulation is tried first, reading the lock's contact points to find the combination without damage.
- 04If needed, a small precision hole is drilled at a known point, a scope is used to view the lock, and the safe is opened.
- 05The drill hole is repaired with hardened plate where required, the lock is replaced or serviced, and a new combination is set.
Typical time: 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the safe
Options
- Electronic lock bypass or replacement
- Battery, keypad or lock replacement, often without any damage.
- Manipulation
- Reading the contact points of a mechanical dial lock to find the combination without damage.
- Precision drilling
- A small hole at a known point, viewed with a scope, then repaired with hardened plate.
- Combination change and service
- New combination or a new lock on a sound safe body.
Compatibility and limits
- Proof of ownership or authority is required before any safe is opened.
- High-rated safes with relockers can take hours to open correctly.
- Fire-damaged or cheaply built safes are often not worth repairing.
Can a locksmith open a safe without drilling?
Read the answer
Often yes. Many lockouts on keypad safes are caused by a dead battery, a failed keypad, or a forgotten code. Replacing the battery or the keypad, or using the maker's override where available, opens the safe without damage.
Mechanical dial locks from makers like Sargent & Greenleaf can sometimes be opened by manipulation: a skilled technician feels and charts the contact points of the wheels to work out the combination. It takes patience but leaves the safe untouched.
Some safes, especially cheap ones, can be bypassed at weak points, while high-rated safes are designed against those attacks. A technician should try the non-destructive options first and explain why drilling is needed if it is.
What happens when a safe has to be drilled?
Read the answer
Drilling a safe is precise work. The technician drills a small hole at a specific point, determined by the lock model, and looks inside with a borescope to manipulate or retract the lock. It is not about cutting the door open.
Burglary-rated safes contain hardplate and relockers, devices that permanently lock the bolts if the safe is attacked. A trained technician knows where they are and avoids triggering them.
After opening, the hole is repaired, often with a hardened steel plug or plate, and the lock is replaced or serviced. Properly repaired, the safe can be used again.
What proof of ownership do I need to open a safe?
Read the answer
Expect to show ID and evidence that the safe and its contents are yours: a purchase receipt, the safe at your own address, or documents from an estate if the safe belonged to a relative. Legitimate safe technicians are careful about this.
For an estate, the executor or administrator usually authorizes the opening. If you are unsure who has authority, check with the estate attorney before scheduling.
For business safes, the owner or an authorized manager should be present. A locksmith that opens a safe without checking ownership is a red flag.
Common questions
My safe keypad beeps but will not open. What should I do?
Change the battery first, since low power is a common cause. If it still fails, the keypad or lock may need replacement, which can often be done without drilling.
Can the combination on my safe be changed?
Yes, on both mechanical and electronic locks. It is a good idea when an employee leaves or you move into a home with an existing safe.
Can a gun safe be opened?
Yes, with proof of ownership. Gun safes from brands like Liberty and AMSEC often use electronic locks that can be opened or replaced without damaging the safe.
Will opening my safe damage what is inside?
Proper drilling targets the lock, not the contents, and a careful technician works to avoid damage.
How long does a safe opening take?
A battery or keypad problem can take minutes. Manipulation or drilling of a high-rated safe can take a few hours.
Can a safe be moved or anchored?
Small and medium safes can be installed and anchored by a locksmith. Very heavy safes need a specialized mover.
